Vital Records
Birth Certificates
Birth records are available at the town/city hall where the child was born, at the town/city hall where the mother was living at the time of the birth, and in Augusta at the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Birth certificates that are older than 75 years from today are considered open records.
Death Certificates
Death records are available at the town/city hall in the municipality where the person passed away, at the town/city hall of the place of residence of the deceased, and in Augusta at the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Death certificates that are older than 25 years from today are considered open records.
Marriage Certificates
Marriage records are available at the town/city hall in the municipality where the couple applied for the license, and in Augusta at the Bureau of Vital Statistics.
Marriage licenses that are older than 50 years from today are considered open records.
Divorce Decrees
Divorce records are not filed at the municipal level. Certified copies of divorces must be obtained from the court where the divorce took place.
Genealogy
Genealogists who have obtained a Researcher ID card from the Maine CDC/ODRVS may request non-certified copies of birth, death, and marriage records. In order to receive certified copies of vital records, genealogists must also show a direct and legitimate interest. Personal identification must be shown to receive access to vital records. Genealogists may call ODVRS at 888-664-9491 for more information regarding obtaining a Researcher ID card. Requests can be obtained through the mail by providing an application, positive identification including, but not limited to, a driver's license, passport, or other government-issued picture identification, and a copy of a Researcher ID card issued by the Maine CDC/ODRVS. Send your application, copy of identification, and Researcher ID card, along with a check payable to the City of Waterville and a self-addressed stamped envelope to the:
