Housing Assistance

There are many reasons and circumstances that can contribute homelessness, such as:

  • Poverty
  • Unemployment
  • Lack of affordable housing
  • Poor physical or mental health
  • Drug and alcohol abuse
  • Gambling
  • Family and relationship breakdown
  • Domestic violence
  • Physical and/or sexual abuse

Whatever the circumstances, in addition to housing services provided by the City's Health and Welfare Department, there are other housing assistance programs available to individuals and families in the greater Waterville area.* While several of the following programs/resources are limited to those who are currently homeless, there are many that are not. Additionally, several of the resources listed also provide homeownership programs, etc.

  • Rental housing listings can be found online in the classifieds for: Morning Sentinel/Kennebec Journal; Craigslist; and Uncle Henry's. Area Facebook sale groups may also feature rental properties and homes for sale (for example: Central Maine Online Yard Sale, Waterville Area Online Yard Sale and For Sale in the Waterville Area).
  • Call 2-1-1 - This service connects Maine callers to information about health and human services including, but not limited to: Alzheimer's Resources, Basic needs - food, clothing, shelter; Counseling; Crisis intervention; Child development; Children's health and insurance; Childcare; Consumer help; Disability services; Elder care; Emergency shelter; Energy assistance; Parenting; Financial assistance; Health care; HIV/AIDS testing; Home care; Legal assistance; Maternal/child health services; Suicide prevention; Substance abuse education programs; Senior services; and Transportation.
